Welcome to the official website for the Social Figurations Conference in Prague from 4th–7th December 2024. We are delighted to receive your interest in this event. In the menu above are links to the Programme, Venue Information, Fees, the Registration Process and Abstract Submission. Please follow these links for further details.
The conference promises to be a major international meeting of historical sociologists and scholars working in cognate fields and disciplines. It arises out of a collaboration between the Norbert Elias Foundation, Amsterdam, the Faculty of Humanities of Charles University, Prague, the International Sociological Association’s RC56 and the University of Warsaw’s Centre of Figurational Research.
The central question addressed in the conference is:
Is historical sociology relevant for understanding and addressing contemporary social problems?
We are seeking contributions from a variety of disciplinary, methodological and theoretical perspectives. Indicative topics of interest include (but are not limited to) developments in shifting patterns of consumption, changing gender relations, military conflicts, colonial processes, and the expansion of global capitalism, inter-related processes relating to environmental degradation, emerging technologies and artificial forms of ‘intelligence’, shifting challenges to law and juridical practices, the re-ascendancy of ethno-nationalism and the sociology of knowledge and religion.
Please note that the deadline for abstracts is now August 30th 2024. If you have any queries about your abstract, or about academic side of the conference more generally, please contact the organising committee on praguefigurationsconference@gmail.com. The members of this committee are: Lucy Brown, Charles University Prague, Baptiste Brossard, University of York, Marta Bucholc, University of Warsaw, Paddy Dolan, Technological University Dublin, Jason Hughes, University of Leicester, Stephen Mennell, University of Leicester, and Jiri Subrt, Charles University Prague.
We very much hope to see you in the beautiful city of Prague for what promises to be a fascinating and stimulating conference.
